It's all very well people saying "You need to SEO your website" or "Did you think about optimizing you site?" but you are probably sat there thinking ok and What Is SEO? How do I do it? What does it even stand for?!

What SEO is and How to Get your Site Found.
SEO is short for Search Engine Optimization, the process of increasing the amount of visitors to a website by ranking high in the search results of major search engines, i.e. Google, Yahoo and Msn.
It makes your website search engine friendly, enabling the search engines to find and rank your site.
The higher a website ranks in the results of a search, the greater the chance that the site will be visited by a user. A user I might add who is actually looking for exactly what you do or sell!
It is common practice for internet users not to click through pages and pages of search results, so where a site ranks in a search is essential for directing more targeted traffic towards your website.
For example, if someone searches for SEO in Google, at the time of writing, there are 102,000,000 results for the term – That's 90 pages of results! If you are buried in page 68 for example it's safe to say no one will find you. In fact, very few people search through as many as 10 pages; generally they have found what they were looking for by page 1 or 2, hence you need to be near the top!
Targeted traffic is also very important – For example what use is it being found in the search engines under furniture when you only sell chairs? Or, being found under books, but you only sell sci-fi books?
Wouldn't it be much better to be found in the top pages for “Sci-Fi books” than buried at page 95 for the general term of books? A visitor will leave your site very quickly if they were looking for a poetry book and have discovered you only sell Sci-Fi books!
